What is Combat Alfalfa?

Combat Alfalfa is a great name for a rock band, and in our opinion, a team of robot soccer enthusiasts. The name was actually inspired by an idea from team member Brad Perry. Those of you who are avid readers of humor literature are (should be) aware of Dave Barry.

Dave Barry wrote for the Miami Herald and is the only humor columnist to recieve the Pulitzer Prize for humor. Often Dave Barry in his articles mentions that a phrase or other conglomeration of words would be a good name for a rock band. Check out the list and see what we mean. Following Brad's lead, we all voted and found Combat Alfalfa to be our favorite.

Team Information / Season Summary

Combat Alfalfa placed fourth in the 2005 robot soccer competition. We were the fastest team out there, the most fun to watch, and we had the best role switching and AI. Our vision was good but not excellent. For good vision see Sweetness. They had 30 Frames/sec with the CMVision code. We built our code upon team AVS, the winners from 2004.

Unfortunately, we did not take the time to implement a kicker and so we were unable to beat either MacGyver or Team Sweetness. Had we a kicker I am confident we would have placed second or possibly even first.

Strengths / Weaknesses

  • Fastest team on the field
  • Smallest/lightest robots
  • Best & most adapatable AI
  • Best role switching
  • No kicker
  • Goalie was hard to stabilize
