According to the class schedule for EE 492-Robotics projects, during the week of March 1st each team will present their final design review. This review is called the Prototype Complete Design Review and the general requirements were included in January as part of Winter Semester Project Requirements. The following section outlines the review deliverables.

Prototype Complete Design Review, week of March 1st.

During February the team should be completing the first working prototype of their robot. The Prototype Complete Design Review is the second informal review of the semester. During this meeting, the team will review their progress in meeting the product specifications set out in the updated FSD, and their efforts in meeting the scheduled activities in their plan. This is primarily a technical review of the design trade-offs made during the development of the prototype. No matter how good a job you do in planning and doing early design simulations, you will always have some last minute surprises when you actually build up the hardware. During this design review, the team should highlight any major discrepancies between their preliminary design and their actual prototype. The only new document that is required at this meeting will be a preliminary material list for their robot. This list will be used to develop a product costing at the final project presentation. We will again schedule 30 minutes reviews for each team. We will expect the following areas to be covered in the review.
  • A demonstration of the working prototype with the functionality consistent with the team's program plans as presented in the final design review last month.
  • A discussion of the key activities left to be completed before the final competition.
  • A review of the project schedule showing progress against the original schedule dates, and then revised dates showing activities that will result in meeting the final program review and competition in early April.
  • Updates to the Functional Specification Document that captures any changes in the basic design since the last checkpoint. I would anticipate that there have been some last minute modifications as each team has completed the prototype.
  • Have copies of your updated Functional Specification, Concept Evaluation and Selection Document, and your revised schedule available for distribution to the reviewers. You do not need to review these documents in your design review, but they should be available for reference.
  • The team should have a Preliminary material list for their robot and the beginnings of a project costing. At this stage, it is only necessary to have the material costs. I will send out a worksheet for you to capture the man-hours of personal involvement so we can estimate the total costs of the program.
  • We will again go with the 30-minute reviews. Each team did their reviews differently last time, but for the most part, everyone had enough time. It is important to do some advanced preparation for these reviews since they do form a part of your overall grade. More importantly, these reviews are similar to those you will do in industry, and they can either make or break your project. Make your review as professional as you can. Slides are optional, but they do help you cover more material in a shorter time.
