Configuring Outlook 2003

This tutorial assumes that you have already installed Outlook 2003. These instructions are for Outlook 2003, although most of these steps will also apply to older versions.

Setting Up Outlook to Work With Your ECEn Email Account

This section covers configuring Outlook 2003 to work with the ECEn mail server using the IMAP protocol. The mail server also supports POP. You will need to have an ECEn email account on the server for these steps to work (see the Email FAQ).

Start Outlook 2003. From the "Tools" menu, select "E-mail Accounts...".

Choose "Add a new e-mail account", then click "Next".

3	Choose "IMAP" and click "Next". (If you want to use the POP protocol instead of IMAP, select "POP3")

4	Enter your name in the box labeled "Your Name:" and your ECEn email address in the box labeled "E-mail Address:".

5	Enter your ECEn email name in the box labeled "User Name:". If you wish, you can check "Remember password" and enter your ECEn email password.

6	Enter `mail.ee.byu.edu` for the incoming mail server and `sslmail.et.byu.edu` for the outgoing mail server.

You should now see something like the following:

8	Click the "More Settings..." button. Select the "Outgoing Server" tab.

9	Check the box labeled "My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication", then select "Log on using" and enter your CAEDM user name. If you wish, you can also enter your CAEDM password.

Select the "Advanced" tab and check both boxes labeled "This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)". Enter the number 465 in the box labeled "Outgoing Server (SMTP)."

Note: If you have Symantec Antivirus installed, it may conflict with this encrypted connection. Refer to "Configuring Symantec Antivirus to Work With Email" for further details and a solution.

You should now see something like this:

Click "OK", then hit the "Next" button.

13	Click "Finish", then enter your ECEn email username and password to login and check your mail.

Please note that all important mail settings can be modified by selecting "E-mail Accounts..." from the "Tools" menu and choosing "View or change existing e-mail accounts". If you need additional help setting up your email, contact the ECEn SysOps.

Configuring Outlook to Accept the Mail Server Security Certificates

Outlook, by default, does not completely trust the ECEn mail server and will constantly ask if you really want to connect to it. This inconvenience can be overcome by installing the mail server's security certificates on your computer. Here's how:

1	Download the following security certifiates and save them to an easy-to-access location, like your desktop. IMAP_ECEnMail.cer POP3_ECEnMail.cer SMTP_ECEnMail.cer

2	Double-click on one of the certificate files to open it.

3	Click on the "Details" tab, then scroll down and select "Thumbprint".

You should now see something like this (the value of the thumbprint will depend on the certificate file, see below):

Make sure that the text in the lower box (the "fingerprint" or "thumbprint" of the certificate) matches the certificate you opened:

6	Click on the "General" tab to continue.

Click the button labeled "Install Certificate..."

8	Click "Next", then "Next", then "Finish".

9	When presented with a security warning, click "Yes".

10	That's it! Click "OK" to close any dialog boxes that may be open. Repeat the process for each of the certificates you downloaded.

11	Once all of the certificates are installed, it is safe to delete the certificate files if you wish to do so.
