When should I use the ECEn web server and when should I use the CAEDM web space?
The ECEn Department web server is not set up to handle secure content or limit access in any way. If you have pages that are related to the ECEn Department and that are meant to be viewed and used by anyone, the Department web server may be a good choice. If your pages are generated by running a lot of code (such as PHP or Perl), require some form of restricted access, or request and receive sensitive data then we encourage use of CAEDM's web server.

CAEDM web space is easy to obtain. One simple option is to create a CAEDM group, which automatically includes web space. See the CAEDM User's Guide ("World Wide Web", p. 11) for information on how to publish and view group web pages.

If you have further questions about what you can do with CAEDM web space (or how to do it) you can contact the ECEn SysOps and we can point you in the right direction. You can also contact the CAEDM administrators directly.

How do students gain access to edit the ECEn pages?
There are a few times when a student would require access to the ECEn dept. web pages. These times include TA'ing a class, managing web pages for an ECEn based club, or any other time a full-time ECEn faculty or staff member requests that a student have access to a piece of the department web space.

In order for you, the student, to gain write access to a particular web page, your faculty representative (professor for whom you are TA'ing, research advisor, etc...) must contact the ECEn SysOps and request access on your behalf. They should include your full name, CAEDM username (probably the same as your Route Y username), preferred email address, and the pages you need access to. For security reasons we cannot simply give students access when the student comes and asks in person without faculty confirmation. After the ECEn SysOps have made the necessary changes, you should receive an email from the SysOps detailing what web pages you have access to. You can then follow the instructions below in order to access and edit them.

How do I access and edit the ECEn pages I am authorized to work with?
It is easiest to access the pages using either an ECEn or a CAEDM Windows machine. You can also gain access from just about any computer on or off campus by using VPN or Citrix. As of right now there is no way for students to directly access web space over the network on an HP-UX or GNU/Linux machine.

Once logged in to a windows machine on the network by one of the methods above, the best way to access your pages is to mount them as a network drive. Do the following:
1
Open "My Computer"
2
From the "Tools" menu, select "Map Network Drive..."

3
Select any unused drive letter. The default value should be fine.
4
Type the following in the box labeled "folder":

\\fs-web.ee.byu.edu\foo

where "foo" represents the name of the directory you have access to. For TA's, this will be ee###, where ### is the course number. For example, if I were a TA for ECEn 313, I would enter

\\fs-web.ee.byu.edu\ee313

as the folder. For other students, this folder name will be emailed to you by the SysOps once you receive access.

If you want the network drive to be mapped automatically next time you log in to windows, select "Reconnect at Logon". This is generally only a good idea if you are on a department machine of which you are the primary user.
6
Do not click Browse. Click Finish.
7
If prompted, enter your CAEDM username and password.
8
Open "My Computer". You should now see something like "ee313 on 'Web Editing'" mapped to the drive you chose earlier.
9
Edit files at will.
10
To disconnect, right click on the network drive and select "Disconnect".
If you encounter any problems accessing your space, contact the ECEn SysOps.

How can I make sure that people visiting my class homepage are getting this semester's version?
The main web address for each class is actually a pointer, generally to the current semester's subdirectory of that class' folder. These pointers are not automatically updated, so once the semester has begun it's a good idea to check and make sure the link on the Department Class Directory points to the right semester. If it doesn't, contact the ECEn Web Team and we will update it for you.
