ECEn Graduate Student Awards Ceremony

The 2008 ECEn Graduate Student Awards Ceremony was held on December 12, 2008. Congratulations to our award winners! Tyson Lowder- Faculty Graduate Student Award. Yusheng Qian- Best Paper Award. Nathan Rollins- Graduate Student Service Award. Tao Shang- International Graduate Student Award.


Fourth International Symposium on Visual Computing (ISVC)

Dr. D. J. Lee and three of his Ph.D. students (Dong Zhang, Zhaoyi Wei, and Kirt Lillywhite) will be presenting 3 papers and 1 poster at the fourth International Symposium on Visual Computing (ISVC) on December 1~3 in Las Vegas, NV. Paper titles are "Security Analysis for Spread-Spectrum Watermarking Incorporating Statistics of Natural Images", .Accurate Optical Flow Sensor for Obstacle Avoidance", .Unsupervised Video Shot Segmentation Using Global Color and Texture Information., and .Edge Detection from Global and Local Views Using an Ensemble of Multiple Edge Detectors.. Proceedings will be published in Lecture Notes in Computer Science by Springer.


Nineteenth IEEE International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR)

Dr. D. J. Lee and two of his Ph.D. students (Dong Zhang and Zhaoyi Wei) will be presenting 1 paper and 2 posters at the nineteenth IEEE International Conference on Pattern Recognition (ICPR) on December 8~11 in Tampa, FL. Paper titles are "Real-time Accurate Optical Flow-based Motion Sensor., .Unsupervised Clustering Using Hyperclique Pattern Constraints", and .Using Collaborative Learning for Image Contrast Enhancement.. Proceedings will be published by IEEE in December 2008.


Prof. Warnick Publishes Book on Numerical Analysis

Prof. Karl Warnick published a book in September 2008, "Numerical Analysis for Electromagnetic Integral Equations," with Artech House. The book uses operator spectral theory to develop a new approach to understanding and improving numerical methods used to solve integral equations for electromagnetic radiation and scattering problems.


BYU Students to Present 3 Papers

Three BYU graduate students will be presenting papers at the International Telemetering Conference this month in San Diego, CA. Qiang Lei will present the paper "Iterative Equalization for SOQPSK in Multipath Fading," Xiaoyu will present "Space-Time Shaped Offset QPSK," and Chris Shaw will present "Adjacent Channel Interference for Turbo-Coded APSK."


2008 Department Honored Alumnus

Randy Mooney of Intel corporation was honored on September 25 as the 2008 Department Honored Alumnus. Mr. Mooney received the MS degree from BYU in 1987 and is currently an Intel Fellow and the director of I/O research in Intel's Microprocessor Technology Lab, part of Intel's Corporate Technology Group. Mr. Mooney gave a presentation to students where he recapped some of the highlights from his career and offered advice to students.


Mallory Phillips Awarded Second Place Undergraduate Student Paper at AUTOTESTCON 2008

Mallory Phillips placed second in AUTOTESTCON 2008's Best Undergraduate Student Paper competition. Mallory designed a battery-free, wireless threshold accelerometer. Her paper outlines the design of the accelerometer as well as its manufacture and details about the testing performed on it. Mallory has been researching bistable switches, the basis for her accelerometer, for two years.


Dr. Long Awarded Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award

Professor David G. Long was awarded the Karl G. Maeser Distinguished Faculty Lecturer Award during the annual university conference. This award is the University's most prestigious faculty award, and is given for exceptional achievements in both scholarship and teaching. As a recipient of this award, Dr. Long will deliver the 2008 Maeser Distinguished Faculty Lecture at the University Forum Assembly scheduled for Tuesday, March 24, 2009 at 11 a.m. in the Marriott Center.


Dr. Penry Receives Microsoft Research Grant

Dr. Penry was one of seven recipients of a Microsoft Research Safe and Scalable Multicore Computing grant for a project entitled "Runtime Packaging of Fine-Grained Parallelism and Locality". This project seeks to adapt and optimize parallel programs at runtime to improve their performance on a diverse set of multicore systems. A July 30 article in EE Times reports on Dr. Penry's project and the six other projects supported through these grants.


Educational Objectives of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Programs

Electrical and Computer Engineering at BYU are student-focused programs. In fact, the goals of the program are given in terms of the life and career accomplishments the program is preparing graduates to achieve. We refer to these as program educational objectives. The objectives have been established by the faculty after consulting with those who have a stake in the success of our students---the college and university administration, parents and families, and representatives from industry, employers, and graduate institutions. Prof. Michael Rice's book appeared this month

Prof. Michael Rice's text book "Digital Communications: A Discrete-Time Approach" was released April 2008 by Pearson Prentice-Hall. The text develops the fundamentals of digital communication theory with an emphasis on discrete-time implementation techniques. It is intended for use in senior-level or first-year graduate courses.


2008 College of Engineering and Technology Faculty and Staff Awards

Adrian Evans was presented with the outstanding service award for 15 years of service at BYU. Adrian has been the secretary of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering since 2002.

Professor James Archibald was presented with the Outstanding Faculty Award in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering for demonstrating outstanding devotion to undergraduate education. The citation noted his exemplary mentoring of undergraduate and graduate students via research activities and senior design projects. Dr. Archibald currently serves as the departments Undergraduate Coordinator.


Professor Randy Beard presented with the College Excellence in Scholarship Award

Professor Randy Beard was presented with the College Excellence in Scholarship Award which recognizes leadership in the conceiving and operation of research programs that benefit students, faculty, society, and the institution. (Read Full Article)


Former M.S./B.S. student Lukas Kunz was nominated by IEEE as an example of the "new face" of engineering for National Engineers week

Lucas Kunz (MS 04) was recently recognized by IEEE as the first runner up for the 2008 New Face of Engineering, a prestigious recognition of junior engineers who are making a significant impact early in their career. Lukas is a senior multi-disciplined engineer in the RF Signal Processing Department at Raytheon Missile Systems in Tucson, Arizona, and focuses on algorithm development for air-to-ground radar applications. He has been involved in conceptual design, development, and demonstration of advanced sensor technologies to help protect American troops in battlefield environments.More


Dr. David Comer Named Outstanding ECEn Teacher

As Engineering Week activities drew to a close, Dr. David Comer was presented the Outstanding ECEn Teacher Award for the 2007-2008 year. Dr. Comer was selected for the award by a vote of students in the Ira A. Fulton College of Engineering and Technology. Dr. Comer has been with Brigham Young University since 1981.


Alumni Receives Prestigious Award from Air Force Research Labs

Kevin Priddy (BS '82) recently received the prestigious Senior Leadership Award for 2007 from the Sensors Directorate, Air Force Research Labs. This award is presented annually "for significant contributions that exhibit outstanding qualities of leadership and management." The award was given to Dr. Priddy (MS AFIT '85, PhD AFIT, '92) for his role in the development of wide-area persistent surveillance systems which utilize commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components enabling very rapid transition from concept to fielded systems.


BYU Alumnus Honored as AT&T Fellow

Christopher Chase (BS'87) was one of 5 recipients of the 2007 AT&T Honor for innovative and pioneering contributions to Virtual Private Network architecture and management. Chris, who works in Austin, TX, received his award at the AT&T Technology Awards Dinner at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, NJ. The AT&T Fellows Honor "acknowledges those individuals in its technical community who have made continual, outstanding and unique contributions to AT&T and the world through their technical and scientific achievements. More


Alumni Receives Prestigious NSF Award

Dr. Wei Ren, who received his PhD in 2004 was recently awarded an NSF CAREER award for his work on distributed multi-vehicle cooperative control. Dr. Ren is currently an assistant professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at Utah State University. His work is expected to have significant impact on applications that include space-based interferometry, environment monitoring, border patrol, and search and rescue.


Prof. Michael Jensen Elevated to IEEE Fellow

Michael Jensen was elevated to Fellow of the IEEE on 15 November 2007 "for contributions to antennas and propagation for mobile devices and multi-antenna wireless communications systems." Each year, the IEEE Fellow Committee recommends a select group of individuals for this prestigious honor. The 2008 Fellows Class consists of 295 members, which by policy is less than one-tenth of a percent of the active IEEE membership. Dr. Jensen joined the BYU faculty in 1994 and currently serves as the director for the BYU Wireless Communications Laboratory and as the Department Chair.
